Heavy Lift Engineering for Blast Furnace Modernisation

The modernisation of Blast Furnace No. 6 at the Zaporizhstal Steel Plant required the replacement of large furnace modules inside one of Ukraine’s busiest steel production facilities. The work had to be executed within a dense industrial environment surrounded by operating production units, pipe racks, rail infrastructure and restricted working space, where conventional heavy lifting methods could not provide the required lifting capacity or operating radius.

To meet these challenges, Mammoet engineered a lifting solution centred on one of the largest crane deployments ever undertaken in Ukraine’s steel industry.

Deploying a 1,600-Tonne Ring Crane in a Live Industrial Environment

A 1,600-tonne ring crane was mobilised, assembled and commissioned on site to perform the exchange of critical blast furnace modules. The ring crane configuration provided exceptional lifting capacity together with full slewing capability, enabling heavy lifts within the confined footprint of the operating steel plant. Every lift was carefully sequenced to integrate with ongoing production activities while maintaining strict safety requirements and minimizing disruption to surrounding operations. The project built on the team’s extensive experience at Zaporizhstal, following the successful dismantling and reconstruction of the 1,210-tonne Blast Furnace No. 3 casing completed in just ten days during an earlier modernization programme.

Successfully deployed a 1,600-tonne ring crane to replace major blast furnace modules inside an active steel plant, delivering one of the largest heavy crane operations ever executed in Ukraine's steel industry.
